Ancient Ruins of Barumini  5.5 hours 8:00 - 1:30 .

Sardinia’s Archaelogical Wonders.  Visited an ancient fortress site dating back to the 15th century BC among the hills of Sardinia.  Took a scenic drive and passed the church of Santuario di Bonario.  Photo stop at the top of Monte Urpino, a park with views of Cagliari.  At Barumini, visited the Su Nuraxi fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  It was built during the Bronze Age and discovered in the 1950’s.  The fortress has four corner towers surrounding a central one.  Some towers are up to 60 feet in height.  “Nuraghi” is a unique defensive system found nowhere else in the world.  Passed rustic, agricultural landscapes of Sardinia during the return drive to our ship.

Cagliari

This was the pilot arriving this morning to bring us through the narrow opening.

Our ship had to pass through this opening and then did a 180 and backed into our docking spot.

Cagliari

Salt ponds are too polluted to still produce salt.  The specks in the water are flamingos.

Cagliari.

Sheep grazing near Barumini.  There are more sheep on the island of Sardinia than there are people.  I saw a black sheep and some lambs in among all the white sheep.

Google this for more information.  Quite fascinating.

Sheep near Barumini.

We climbed stairways and rock paths to get to the opening.  Then we walked through a narrow passageway and  descended to an interior courtyard.  After that we entered and learned about several chambers.

This is a look from above at the area where we arrived after we walked through a narrow passageway and descended the stone stairway.  We entered some of the five chambers off this open courtyard.

We had to walk through a narrow passage and climb down a stone stairway similar to this to get to the inside courtyard.

Looking at the top of one of the chambers.

Inside the ruins.  The openings on the bottom were for food storage.  The upper openings may have been connecting tunnels.

This was a wall of the  interior courtyard.

Inside the ruins.

This collection of rocks was a series of circles which were the bases of the houses.

I saw the bases today.  These frames were covered with leaves/vegetation to make the top.

As you will be able to tell by the number of photos, I found this site very interesting.  It also helps that the Wifi connection is quite strong at this time.  Lucky me.

Foundations surround the conical towers.

Passed a lot of pretty countryside on the way to Barumini.
