Phone says I walked 4.9 miles and walked 11,498 steps and climbed 22 floors!  It must have been the steep walk up to the castle ruins.

That is not me, it's one of my buddies from the day before.

TOUR INFO "Following a morning of scenic sailing, join your Program Director for a stroll around Bernkastel, one of the prettiest villages in the Mosel Valley. Actually, Bernkastel is two communities; its sister town, Kues, sits on the opposite bank of the Mosel. After your introduction to Bernkastel’s half-timbered houses and petite shops, you’ll have free time to continue exploring on your own.

Berkastel-Kues is known for wine production and is a state-recognized health resort.  Earliest evidence of humans dates back to 3000 BC.

The beautiful medieval marketplace (Mittelalterlicher Marktplatz) has gabled timber-frame houses dating back to the 17th century. Find the narrow Spitzhauschen (Pointed House) from 1416, St Michaelsbrunnen (St. Michael's Fountain) from 1906, a row of well-preserved buildings and the Renaissance Town Hall from 1608.  See Graach gate, the only remaining town gate. Castle Landshut ruins is a popular lookout point over the Moselle Valley.  Other squares include Platz am Barenbrunnen (Square at the Bear's Fountain), Karlsbader Platz, Doctorbrunnen (Doctor Fountain), Late Gothic St Nikolaus-Hospital, and Nicolaus von Kues the Electoral Complex.

After lunch onboard, you’ll visit one of the area’s most famous wineries, and sample
a few of its vintages, during an Exclusive Discovery Series event.

The entry to the winery.  Part of the vineyard is on the hillside above our heads.

The Queen of Wine is passionate about her award-winning wine and her winery. There are bottles of wine in the cellar that are valued at over $10,000.

Slate is important to wine making.  In the cellar, it helps to maintain temperature.  In the vineyard, slate also absorbs the heat from the sun and also helps to maintain the temperature.

Dinner is onboard this evening."

Scenic cruising on the Mosel River this morning.

Castle Landshut ruins above Bernkastel which is a popular lookout point over the Moselle Valley.  Bernkastel was very busy in town and there were many bike riders and walkers passing by our ship as both sides of the river have paths.

Old Town Hall/Rathaus is above.  St. Michael’s Fountain in front.

Public punishment in Medieval times.  A pick pocket might have his earlobe split so people knew his crime.  A harping housewife might have to wear a mask of a donkey.  Passerbys would throw garbage at the person and harass them.

The beautiful medieval marketplace (Mittelalterlicher Marktplatz) has gabled timber-frame houses dating back to the 17th century.  St Michaelsbrunnen (St. Michael's Fountain) from 1906, a row of well-preserved buildings and the Reanaissance Town Hall from 1608 surround the marketplace.

The narrow Spitzhauschen (Pointed House) is from 1416.  The base is smaller as taxes were based on the square footage on the ground.

Platz am Barenbrunnen (Square at the Bear's Fountain)  The Asian woman in the ivory coat is Yumi, she came to spend the weekend with her husband, Johannes - my guide.  Yumi traveled from their home in Germany by train.

Graach gate, the only remaining town gate.

Grape vines are decorative throughout the town.

I met up with my beer drinking friends from yesterday and we walked about 30 minutes up the hill to the Landshut Castle to enjoy the view.

Rose bushes are planted next to the grapevines to help monitor mildew.  If the rosebush gets mildew, then it is time to begin preventative measures on the grapevines.

These hillsides are very steep and this picture doesn’t really give the best perspective.

Flooding can be a problem in this town.

Late Gothic St Nikolaus-Hospital across the river in Kues.  More pictures of Kues below.

This area is lovely, the weather was cloudy all day, but it did not rain.
