The fjords and channels of Chile are important navigable channels providing access to ports like Punta Arenas, Puerto Chacabuco and Puerto Natales.   In general, these channels have high, abrupt shores.  The numerous peaks and headlands are remarkably alike in character.  They have bold, rugged heads with a gloomy grandeur rarely seen elsewhere.  All waters between the Chilean baselines and the continental shoreline are considered internal waters and Chile controls them.
