Day 56, Sat. March 11 Natal, Brazil 7-4:00

Day 56, Sat. March 11 Natal, Brazil 7-4:00

Survey the sights around Natal by coach, including its most impressive old, new and natural landmarks.

Drive the streets of the historic district and see turn-of-the-century buildings and a 16th-century fortress.

Travel down the coast road, Via Costeira, linking Ponta Negra Beach and its resort hotels to the city.

Be wowed by enormous, green-clad Morro do Careca sand dune – tall enough to qualify as a mountain.

Pose next to the planet’s biggest cashew tree and shop handicraft stalls in the cells of a former jail.  (Craft market but not in a prison.)

Enjoy a relaxing introduction to Natal on this tour that visits modern, historic, and sandy neighborhoods – along with browsing time at a handicrafts market. Traveling by coach, you’ll take in the key sights of Old Natal, tucked along the Potengi River. Highlights here include the grand Alberto Maranhão Theater built in 1898 and leafy Praça André de Albuquerque square surrounded by the buildings of government and the courts. A photo stop near the Fortaleza dos Reis Magos provides excellent views of this star-shaped former fortress built in 1598 to protect the young settlement from marauding French pirates. The most scenic stretch of oceanside Via Costeira is lined by rolling dunes on one side and beaches on the other, while further down toward famous Ponta Negra Beach, contemporary hotels and resorts create a more citified skyline. Once at Ponta Negra, you’ll stop to admire Natal’s most iconic landmark, the 390-foot-tall Morro do Careca Dune. This hill dwarfs everything around it, except for the world’s largest cashew tree growing here, its 8,600 square-foot canopy a sight not easily missed. Your shopping interval will take place at the Centro do Turismo market, a former prison whose cells now house artisans’ stalls.  There was a market but not in a former prison.

The population of Natal is about 860,000.  It is the closest state capital of Brazil to Africa and Europe.  Natal served as a host city for the 2014 Fifa World Cup.  It is known for the natural environment and the  largest cashew tree in world.  A 16th century fortress was constructed at mouth of Potengi River.  Known for beaches and off-season Carnival.  The temperature is about 27 degrees centigrade and Second largest urban park in Brazil is located in Natal.  Observe plants and animals that are typical of the Atlantic forest.  The Medieval fortress was the first milestone of the city founded on 12/25/1599.  Natal is an industrial port.

Natal is a principal commercial center.  Tourism is important due to the beaches and sand dunes.  Silk and cotton, foodstuffs and fish are all important commercial endeavors.  Natal was a CIA outpost.  I saw bars on windows and razor wire around the walls surrounding houses.  I was surprised to see that trees and grass could grow on the sand mounds.

We stopped to visit a space place with rockets and satellites.

We also stopped to see the largest cashew tree in the world.  When a branch touches the ground, roots start to grow down in the ground.  This is how the tree spreads.

My guide said that Natal is the cheapest place to live.  They go to bed at 8:00 and get up early.  Lunch is the biggest meal of the day.  They have soup, juice for dinner and go to sleep.

The pink house was where a princess spent 11 months on her honeymoon.

The public square was where punishment was delivered.  If a man molested a woman, his balls were smashed in the public square.

In the business district, there were over two blocks of eye glass businesses.  It would be convenient to shop and compare prices.

The Cathedral has of unique roof.   The architect said the roof represented the ten fingers of God.

Streets in the city running one way were named for the rivers and the streets running perpendicular were named for the presidents.

If a woman is not married by age 25, her father locks her in a room with no windows.
