Day 163 Sun. June 25, 2023 Kushiro, (Hokkaido), Japan from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Day 163 Sun. June 25, 2023  Kushiro, (Hokkaido), Japan from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.  The tour options included Kushiro Wetland and Crane Reserve, Crane Reserve and Kushiro City Museum, or Kushiro Wetland and City Museum.  All these tours are booked.

I went for a walk along the river.  The phone says I walked 9467 steps today.  S

topped by the Kushiro Tourism and International Relations Center.  There were children performing on the stage.  There were also tables throughout the venue selling a variety of food.

We passed some fishing boats.  One had a system that was spraying water on the (fish?) that were under netting.

Kushiro is the central city of eastern Hokkaido.  The Kushiro River flows through the center of town and is a social center for the people.  Recent improvements along the river are meant to preserve the environment for future generations.  The goal is to have a river resistant to disasters, promote environmental preservation and help people interact with one another.

There is open space along the river intended to be a natural disaster prevention base.  It is designed to protect the city from flood damage caused by tsunami waves and storm surges resulting from earthquakes, typhoons, etc.  People can use this open space for recreation activities during ordinary times.  When the river rises the sediment can be utilized as stuffing for sandbags that can be used to prevent the embankment from collapsing.

We crossed the Nusumai Bridge with has four bronze statues representing the four seasons of the year.  We went to the adjoining Kushiro’s Fisherman’s Wharf MOO and EGG.  These urban tourist and local facilities offer food, shopping and liesure activities.  Tourists and citizens can enjoy a variety of activities.

You can get just about anything out of a vending machine on the street.
