Los Angeles 1/4/18

Los Angeles, California - Our tour took us on a ride around LA, passing some major sites.  I went to Target to get whatever I thought I needed for the next 121 days.  We traveled  4,989 nautical miles from Miami to LA over 20 days.  Some people that got on in Miami got off and other people got on for the 121 days to London.

Today's picture is The Walt Disney Concert Hall project was initiated in 1987 with a $50 million dollar donation from Walt's widow Lillian.   Frank Gehry's designs were completed in 1991.   After many problems with fundraising, groundbreaking took place in 1999 and it opened in 2003.  Construction costs totaled $247 million.    The steel steel skin was a cost saving measure, but areas reflected the sun so intently that temperatures on nearby sidewalks reached 140 degrees.  People in nearby apartments saw their air conditioning bills increase three-fold and they threatened to sue.  To solve the problems, a computer analysis determined what areas of the steel needed to be sanded or replaced to reduce the intense glare.  The acoustics inside are phenomenal.  When playing a Ravel piece, the incredible acoustics revealed that the sheet music was printed with wrong notes.  The Los Angeles Philharmonic had used this sheet music for years, but never realized the sound was off.   This building can be seen in many movies and televisions shows.

The famous Hollywood sign originally, said Hollywoodland.  It was an advertisement for a land development.  When the land was fully developed the "land" letters were removed or they fell down and were never put back up.  The sign is very rarely lighted anymore.

Walt Disney Concert Hall designed by Frank Gehry opened in 2003.    Dr. Lori said it costs a tremendous amount of money.  The steel reflected the sun so intently that temperatures on nearby sidewalks reached 140 degrees.  People in nearby apartments saw their air conditioning bills increase three-fold and they threatened to sue.  To solve the problems, they sanded the steel surfaces to reduce the heat transfer.

This was the courthouse where Charles Manson was tried and sentenced.

Do you remember what movies you saw this building in?  It's Los Angeles' City Hall since 1928.

We drove on Route 66 for a very short time.
