Sloth Sanctuary at Gamboa Rainforest, Panama 12/23/17

Gamboa Rainforest, Panama  We enjoyed some time with the sloths that are in a Rehabilitation Center.  They reminded me of gymnasts as they moved around and were not as slow as I anticipated.  The sloths did not live in cages, but climbed around on frameworks provided for them.  I guess they are not ambitious enough to run away as there was no confinement.  Sloths eat a leaf-based diet.  Our next stop was a butterfly garden.  The butterflies were beautiful, but difficult to photograph.

Two-toed and three-toed sloths.  Climb on frames and are not caged.  Two-toed sloths and three-toed sloths are not closely related.

Sloths are slow movers because they have long arms combined with small, narrow shoulder blades which restrict their movements.

Close, eating the same leaf.  There are four species of three-toed sloths.  They will spend their whole lives in the trees and will only go to the forest floor to defecate once a week.

Even closer, eating the same leaf.

Two-toed sloth should be called two-fingered sloth as they have two fingers on their front limbs.  They have three toes on their hind limbs.  They weigh about four to eight kg.

Two-toed sloth - sloths can hang upside down and save energy as they don't need to balance on a branch.

Sloths can sleep up to 18 hours a day.

They look like gymnasts when they move and are not as slow as I imagined.  Two-toed sloths tend to  move faster than three-toed sloths.
