Carcassonne  Medieval fortress/citadel and a UNESCO site, like a fairy tale.  A strategic location which links the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and the Massif Central to the Pyrenees.  There are two outer walls and 53 towers.  Roman built walls are different than the medieval walls.

Stroll  historic town center, medieval walls of Avignon.

Visit the Papal Palace UNESCO The Palais des Papes was the 14th century/1376 seat of the papacy on the bank of the Rhone River.  A fortress of Gothic architecture that was beautifully decorated by Simone Martini and Matteo Giovanetti. Also see the Romanesque Cathedral of Notre-Dame-des-Doms, Episcopal ensemble and the Avignon Bridge.  To the north, Palais Vieux (Old Palace) and to the south is Palais Neuf (New Palace).  Palais Vieux has a vast Consistory Hall leading to St. John Chapel.  Above it is the Tinel/Feast Hall.  To the north, Trouillas Tower is one of the highest medieval towers at 52 feet. The Stag Room is decorated with frescoes representing rustic scenes.  Pal Neuf has the Great Chapel, braced with massive flying buttresses.  The west wing is known as the Wing of the Great Dignitaries.

Free time with lunch on my own in the city.

I choose the pictures in sequential order and then they drop into my post any way they want.
