Day 8 10/26 Wednesday Italian Riviera via Monaco
Stop in the tiny principality of Monaco. Visit Le Rocher, or the Rock of Monaco walk narrow alleyways from the middle ages to Place Saint Nicolas and Placette Bosio, the Chapel of Mercy, Palais de Justice and the Cathedrale de Monaco (a Roman-Byzantine style building built in 1875). It houses tombs of Monaco’s former Princes (many Grimaldis), an awesome high altar and the Episcopal throne of white Carrara marble and a retable by Louis Brea (Nicois painter, 1500) (4 Rue Colonel Bellando de Castro, 30 min). St. Martin Gardens (1816) is principality’s first public garden and Oceanographic Museum of Monaco (Avenue Saint-Martin 10 min,). Old Town. Stop in the Prince’s Palace (Place du Palais), fortress from late 12th century. At 11:55, watch the changing of the guard (a solemn military ritual) in front of the Princely Palace/Palace Square (home of the current monarch). The Palace was built in 1924 for Prince Louis II. Courthouse 5 Rue Colonel Bellando de Castro.
